"Keto" is a popular shorthand for the ketogenic diet, a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential health benefits and weight loss effects.

The ketogenic diet focuses on drastically reducing carbohydrate intake while increasing the consumption of fats and a moderate amount of protein. The goal of this dietary approach is to induce a state of ketosis in the body.

Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body shifts from primarily using glucose (from carbohydrates) as its primary source of energy to using ketones, which are produced from fats. In the absence of sufficient carbohydrates, the body starts breaking down fats into ketones, which can then be used as an alternative fuel source.

Typically, a standard ketogenic diet consists of the following macronutrient ratios:

·         High Fat: About 70-75% of daily calories come from fats.

·         Moderate Protein: About 20-25% of daily calories come from protein.

·         Low Carbohydrate: Only about 5-10% of daily calories come from carbohydrates.

Foods that are commonly included in a ketogenic diet include:

·         Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.

·         Protein sources such as meat, fish, eggs, and some dairy products.

·         Low-carb vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, etc.

Foods to be avoided or limited on the ketogenic diet are typically high in carbohydrates, such as grains, starchy vegetables, sugars, and processed foods.

Benefits of the ketogenic diet may include weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and increased levels of "good" HDL cholesterol. However, it's essential to approach any diet with caution and consider individual health needs and goals. The ketogenic diet may not be suitable for everyone, and it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian before starting any significant dietary changes.
